Shadow over Normoth is a free action game for PC created by an indie developer named Warkus. It is a survival horror adventure that was inspired by the classic titles from the PS1 era. It was made for the Haunted PS1 Summer of Shivers 2021 event in just 30 days.
As was with the earlier iterations of the Resident Evil and Silent Hill series that it took inspiration from, Shadow over Normoth features similar low-poly 3D graphics and old-school sound effects that faithfully replicate the look and feel of those classic titles.
In Shadow over Normoth, you find yourself trapped in the mysterious and forsaken seaside town of Normoth, a place that appears to be overrun with fish monsters and other strange creatures from the deep. As you try to make your way through the town, you’ll scavenge for weapons and various other essentials items that you will need for survival, while getting used to the fixed camera angles and tank controls.
As you run around and defeat monsters, you'll discover hidden secrets that will help you slowly unravel the mysteries of what exactly happened to the once-bustling town. Over the course of your adventure, you will get to explore silent and misty streets, abandoned houses, and foul sewers as you search for answers and figure a way to escape your current predicament while avoiding or facing monsters head-on.
Shadow over Normoth might put off some players looking for an immersive and lengthy campaign to play through. It takes only about 40 minutes to finish the game. While that number does seem like a rather short runtime, one has to remember, this game was made in just 30 days, by a single person. Thus, this fact might not be such a shortcoming as it is an impressive feat.
If you grew up playing those classic survival horror games during the PS1 era and you're looking to experience that again, Shadow over Normoth will be right up your alley. It faithfully replicates the look, feel, and gameplay of those classic titles, and it's something that you will surely appreciate and feel nostalgic for. Recommended.
